RESEARCH ON THE READING SKILLS OF CHILDREN WITH MENTAL RETARDATION

The research was contacted in primary schools in Cyprus in 2004. The purpose of the research was to:

1. To examine whether the reading skills of mentally retarded children match with the skills of non retarded children of the same age or of younger age.
2. To decide which learning approach is better for the above group i.e. visual, auditory, combination of these(word, sentence, picture, sounds).

It was found that their reading skills do not meet with children of their age or even children with younger age.

More details of the reseach will be found and downloaded from this site soon.

THE STORY OF THE GROUP.

In 1984 the present head of the group Mr. Pantelis Makris was handed a Spectrum computer and asked, by his school principal, to use it with his hearing impaired students.

Very soon he realized his limitations, as well as the potentials of the little machine and started, with some colleagues, developing the first Greek fonts for the Spectrum.

This was the first time that teachers, who later became members of the group, found it necessary to work together and utilize technology for education.

Soon after many teachers joined the group and proceeded in the development of various software and special educational solutions.
